Whatever you've heard about Caraval, it doesn't compare to the reality. It's more than just a game or a performance. It's the closest you'll ever find to magic in this world . . .
Welcome, welcome to Caraval―Stephanie Garber’s sweeping tale of two sisters who escape their ruthless father when they enter the dangerous intrigue of a legendary game.
Scarlett has never left the tiny island where she and her beloved sister, Tella, live with their powerful, and cruel, father. Now Scarlett’s father has arranged a marriage for her, and Scarlett thinks her dreams of seeing Caraval, the far-away, once-a-year performance where the audience participates in the show, are over.
But this year, Scarlett’s long-dreamt of invitation finally arrives. With the help of a mysterious sailor, Tella whisks Scarlett away to the show. Only, as soon as they arrive, Tella is kidnapped by Caraval’s mastermind organizer, Legend. It turns out that this season’s Caraval revolves around Tella, and whoever finds her first is the winner.
Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. But she nevertheless becomes enmeshed in a game of love, heartbreak, and magic with the other players in the game. And whether Caraval is real or not, she must find Tella before the five nights of the game are over, a dangerous domino effect of consequences is set off, and her sister disappears forever.
Oh my lord, this book. I honestly can’t explain how amazing this book was. I know I’ve said that about so many books I’ve reviewed this year, but that’s honestly because I’ve read so many amazing books, and this is now pretty high up on the list!
I think I might even go as far as to say this is my favorite book of 2017 so far. Of course, I haven’t read all of the new releases I’m super excited for this year, but I know for a fact this will definitely be in my top ten if not my top five favorites of the year!
This book was just so… magical. I don’t know if my Crown of Wishes review has gone up just yet, but I compared it a lot to this book, and if you’ve read CoW before reading this one, you’ll definitely love Caraval!
This book has a hot, mysterious book boyfriend, a strong female lead that’s got an even stronger bond with her sister (shout out for strong sister relationships, I live for this), and mystery that will keep you turning the pages until you’ve reached the end. And even when you get to the end, you won’t truly understand everything that happened. It’s amazing.
I’m not going to lie, the one thing that I didn’t particularly care for was how ditzy her sister, Tella, was portrayed at first. It was really cringy to read at first, and I was really really hoping that it would change towards the end, and I didn’t even have to actually wait until the end of the book for that to happen. Honestly, that’s just why it’s even better. Every time I was afraid a bad trope would show up, it was almost immediately thrown a different direction that was much better.
I hope everyone has a fantabulous day/evening/morning/whenever you’re reading this and happy reading!
