Summary: passage, n.
i. A brief section of music composed of a series of notes and flourishes.
ii. A journey by water; a voyage.
iii. The transition from one place to another, across space and time.

In one devastating night, violin prodigy Etta Spencer loses everything she knows and loves. Thrust into an unfamiliar world by a stranger with a dangerous agenda, Etta is certain of only one thing: she has traveled not just miles but years from home. And she’s inherited a legacy she knows nothing about from a family whose existence she’s never heard of. Until now.

Nicholas Carter is content with his life at sea, free from the Ironwoods—a powerful family in the colonies—and the servitude he’s known at their hands. But with the arrival of an unusual passenger on his ship comes the insistent pull of the past that he can’t escape and the family that won’t let him go so easily. Now the Ironwoods are searching for a stolen object of untold value, one they believe only Etta, Nicholas’ passenger, can find. In order to protect her, he must ensure she brings it back to them— whether she wants to or not.

Together, Etta and Nicholas embark on a perilous journey across centuries and continents, piecing together clues left behind by the traveler who will do anything to keep the object out of the Ironwoods’ grasp. But as they get closer to the truth of their search, and the deadly game the Ironwoods are playing, treacherous forces threaten to separate Etta not only from Nicholas but from her path home . . . forever.

My Review: I’ve never read a book about time travel, but I’m obsessed with Doctor Who so obviously I was drawn to this one. I put in the request to get it early on NetGalley, assuming I wouldn’t get it, but then I got an email that I did! I can’t even begin to describe my reaction and how excited I was.

Of course, with my luck, I got it right before my finals, and I’ll admit that I slacked on studying because of this book.. but that’s not important. What’s important is how in love I am with this book now!

i love this book i love this book

I remember attempting to start her other series, The Darkest Minds, and I just couldn’t get into it for whatever reason. I was somewhat afraid it would be the same story for this one, but it turns out I’m obsessed with this new world now!

I’ve been in this rut where every female lead character has been annoying the hell out of me. I think it’s because they’ve all been pretty whiny characters, but Etta definitely wasn’t that. I think out of the entire book, she might’ve done the self wallowing thing once or twice. And considering everything, that’s pretty good.

And then there’s Nicholas.

I mean, first off, I’ve found my first book boyfriend of 2016. He’s sarcastic, definitely got quick wit, and he balances out Etta perfectly. Can I have my own Nicholas please and thank you.

As for the action of this book, it was a bit slow in the beginning. It was a lot of world building and a lot of explaining going on, but I was fine with that. The last two hundred pages were so packed full of fights and traveling that I literally couldn’t put it down.

I simply cannot wait until the sequel. Why does 2017 have to be so far away?!

give it to me now
